BMW shows new EV concept ahead of IAA

Vision Neue Klasse shows new direction from BMW to challenge for premium EV segment

David Leggett September 04 2023

BMW has shown a new EV concept that will underpin its next generation of electric cars from 2025. The Vision Neue Klasse comes loaded with features designed, in particular, to appeal to Chinese consumers who have been moving away from Western brands toward domestic ones – such as BYD.

The future generation of BMW iDrive will transform the vehicle into a digital experience space, the company said. With BMW Panoramic Vision, a new multifunction steering wheel, the new central display and a new BMW 3D head-up display as central display and operating elements, the quintessential BMW user experience is being reinterpreted in all Neue Klasse models, BMW said.

“The BMW Vision Neue Klasse combines our ability to innovate in the core areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “In this way, we are always able to stay two steps ahead of the future: The Neue Klasse is already bringing the mobility of the next decade to the roads in 2025 – and leading BMW into a new era.”

BMW said the Vision Vehicle, which will be unveiled for the first time in public at the IAA Mobility 2023 International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich, embodies a clear design language that has been pared down to the essentials. In the interior, the next generation of BMW iDrive guarantees a unique digital user experience that merges real and virtual worlds. Increased use of secondary raw materials, resource-efficient production and a fully-electric drive train with sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology reduces the carbon footprint of the Neue Klasse across the vehicle lifecycle.

“Thirty percent more range, 30 percent faster charging, 25 percent more efficiency – the Neue Klasse represents a major technological leap that will take EfficientDynamics to new heights. The same applies to its design – which could not be any more futuristic,” said Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development. “With the Neue Klasse, we have embarked on the biggest investment in the company’s history. We are not just writing the next chapter of BMW; we’re writing a whole new book. That’s why the Neue Klasse will certainly impact all model generations.”

Tyres and exhaust systems expected to dominate the automotive aftermarket industry

Today’s consumers have a great desire to customize and distinguish their vehicles. The demand for aftermarket extras, including specialized wheels, performance upgrades, interior renovations, audio systems, and aesthetic alterations, has increased owing to this trend. Per GlobalData estimates, the global automotive aftermarket industry will be valued at $677 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% by 2030.
