Dani Cole June 26 2023

BMW-owned Rolls-Royce brand CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvö has said that hydrogen fuel cells may be a possibility in the luxury brand’s future.

The luxury car brand is aiming to transition to all-electric by 2030. Its first batch of EVs, the Rolls-Royce Spectre, is expected to begin deliveries later in 2023.

As reported in several news outlets, Müller-Ötvö made the comments during press interviews, adding that they would use consider hydrogen fuel cells when the technology available was advanced enough.

“If hydrogen will be used in the future, then it’s fuel cells.

“We might exit batteries, and we might enter into fuel cells.”

Rolls-Royce’s parent company, BMW, is launching the iX5 Hydrogen, a fuel cell prototype. On the announcement, made earlier this year, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said: “Hydrogen is a versatile energy source that has a key role to play in the energy transition process and therefore in climate protection. After all, it is one of the most efficient ways of storing and transporting renewable energies.”
