BMW iX5 Hydrogen tests with pilot fleet

Vehicles have a range of around 313 miles

Dani Cole August 16 2023

BMW’s iX5 Hydrogen vehicle has entered a “critical” phase after four years of development work, the automaker announced.

The first iX5 Hydrogen vehicles are now in a 100-strong pilot fleet, which is being deployed internationally for demonstration and trial purposes, with locations including the UK.

The pilot fleet was announced earlier this year.

The vehicles are built in the BMW Group’s pilot plant at its Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ) in Munich.

Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG said: “Hydrogen is a versatile energy source that has a key role to play in the energy transition process and therefore in climate protection.”

The iX5 can hold six kilograms of hydrogen, giving it a range of around 313 miles.

Individual fuel cells are sourced from Toyota Motor Corporation.

High upfront costs could be detrimental towards the growth of the off-highway EV market

The global off-highway electric market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.4% by 2030, per GlobalData estimates. Despite the strong growth, high upfront costs may pose a challenge. Due to the high capacity of these vehicles, they consume large amounts of power from a number of battery packs installed on the vehicle, whose high cost in turn adds to the cost of the vehicle, thereby increasing the initial cost. However, governments worldwide are offering subsidies and tax exemptions in order to help customers to counter the initial purchase cost.
