Beijing Hyundai Motor Company (BHMC), Hyundai Motor Company’s main Chinese joint venture, launched the all-new Elexio battery-powered family SUV at an event in Yanti, China, as the South Korean automaker stepped up the roll-out of its new energy vehicle (NEV) strategy in the world’s largest vehicle market.

Based on Hyundai’s dedicated E-GMP battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform, the Elexio was tailored specifically for the Chinese market under the company’s ‘In China, For China, To Global’ strategy.’ The new SUV is powered by an 88.1 kWh battery, providing a driving range of 722 km and able to be charged from 30% to 80% approximately 27 minutes using a DC fast charging system.

The Elexio’s onboard systems and AI capabilities are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip. The interior features a 27-inch ultra-thin 4K widescreen display and Hyundai’s Cyber Eye heads-up display (HUD). Safety has been increased with the adoption of a 720° armored body structure using 77.5% high-strength steel content, a nine-airbag system including extended side curtain airbags, and automatic pop-out mechanical door handles for emergency access.

Hyundai said that the Elexio “represents its continuing commitment to electrification and its global 2030 vision,” adding that it plans to include several additional SUVs and sedans to its NEV line-up in China by 2030.

The automaker said in a statement: “Hyundai has evolved beyond a traditional automotive enterprise to become a global high-tech company dedicated to providing intelligent mobility solutions. Hyundai Motor promises to keep pace with the development of the Chinese automotive industry and meet the high expectations of Chinese consumers. The company pledges to take firm root in the Chinese market and has full confidence in its future in China.”
