Australian new vehicle sales in September rose 18.3% year on year to 110,702 units, a record for the month.

FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said 900,000 new sales had been achieved so far this year and four of the past five months had been record months.

Sales of SUVs and light commercial vehicles made up 79.4% of sales with passenger vehicles accounting for 16.8%.

Battery electric vehicles accounted for 8% while electrified vehicles overall (battery electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid) recorded for 18.3%.

Toyota was the top selling brand with 20,912 sales. Mazda followed with 8,031 then Ford (8,015), Kia (7,303) and Hyundai (6,217).

Toyota's Hi-Lux truck was the top selling vehicle recording 5,776 sales. It was followed by Ford Ranger (5,429), Tesla Model Y (3,811), Isuzu Ute D-Max (2,885) and Toyota RAV4 (2,798).

High upfront costs could be detrimental towards the growth of the off-highway EV market

The global off-highway electric market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.4% by 2030, per GlobalData. Despite the strong growth, high upfront costs may pose a challenge. Due to the high capacity of these vehicles, they consume large amounts of power from a number of battery packs installed on the vehicle, whose high cost in turn adds to the cost of the vehicle, thereby increasing the initial cost. However, governments worldwide are offering subsidies and tax exemptions in order to help customers to counter the initial purchase cost.
