ArcelorMittal North America and GM announce supply agreement

Recycled and renewable steel supply deal starts this year

Dani Cole June 07 2023

Steel and mining company ArcelorMittal North America will supply General Motors (GM) with recycled and renewably produced steel, which is expected to begin in Q2 2023.

The deal offers “significantly reduced” CO2 emissions, ArcelorMittal said.

The steel contains a minimum of 70% scrap and has been independently verified.

Peter Leblanc, CMO Automotive at ArcelorMittal said: “This is a terrific first step in supplying steel with substantially lower CO2 emissions to automakers in North America. We are proud to join GM in their march toward a zero emissions future."

Jeff Morrison, GM vice president of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, said: “This agreement provides another example of how we are innovating with our suppliers to reduce emissions throughout the supply chain.”

ArcelorMittal says it is committed to reducing the carbon intensity of the steel it produces by 25% globally by 2030 and to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
