Founded in 2019, Quality Match focuses on data quality assurance for computer vision and artificial intelligence.

The business works on interpreting and analysing datasets used to train AI models, including those underpinning advanced driver assistance and automated driving technologies.

Wayve said the deal underlines its “continued investment in data accuracy as a cornerstone of safe and scalable autonomous driving.”

As per the agreement, Quality Match’s 20-strong team, all based in Germany, will join Wayve.

The German company’s chief executive, Daniel Kondermann, will take on the role of director of data at Wayve.

Commenting on the deal, Alex Kendall, co-founder and CEO of Wayve, said: “Daniel and his team have built exceptional expertise in data quality and understanding for AI, which will strengthen the robustness, interpretability, and performance of our systems.

Kondermann said: “Joining Wayve is an exciting opportunity to apply our expertise to one of the most exciting domains: autonomous driving. Together with Wayve’s pioneering approach to embodied intelligence, we can accelerate the development of safe and scalable AI.”

Wayve develops autonomous driving models, including its AI Driver system, by training them on extensive volumes of video and real-world driving data, which the system is designed to learn and emulate. Bringing in a dedicated data quality team is expected to underpin this training process as it scales.

The acquisition also deepens Wayve’s presence in Germany. Earlier this year, the company opened an on-road testing and development centre in the Stuttgart area and deployed a new fleet of test vehicles to further develop its automated driving technology.

In September, Wayve signed a letter of intent with Nvidia to evaluate a new $500m strategic investment in its next funding round. Wayve and Nvidia have collaborated since 2018.
