Waymo, an Alphabet (Google) subsidiary and the sole commercial robotaxi operator in the US, has announced an expansion of its autonomous ride-hailing service into new areas of the San Francisco Peninsula and Silicon Valley in California.

This move comes after receiving approval from California authorities last month to scale-up operations.

Waymo’s expansion includes areas such as Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, and Burlingame on the peninsula. In Silicon Valley, the expansion reaches further into Palo Alto and Menlo Park.

Additionally, Waymo is broadening its services in Los Angeles, including Playa del Rey, Ladera Heights, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and the entire stretch of Sunset Boulevard.

Although Waymo has the green light to launch services in San Jose, the company has yet to disclose specific plans for the city.

Currently, Waymo is the only US firm offering robotaxi services with paying passengers.

The recall aims to update software and mitigate collision risks with various roadway barriers. This follows an investigation by US auto safety authorities into the performance of Waymo’s fifth-generation automated driving system.

The recall affects 1,212 vehicles equipped with the company’s advanced driving system software.
