According to local media reports, 766,000 Volkswagen group vehicles will be recalled worldwide for a brake control system software update.
The braking control system may not function properly in certain driving conditions, such as when the driver over-steers, under-steers or slams on the brakes, a VW spokesman told Reuters.
Confirming a weekend report by the DPA news agency, the spokesman said 288,000 VW brand cars would be recalled in Germany.
Including Audi and Skoda models, the tally is about 385,000 cars.
