Volkswagen Group China (VGC), with Volkswagen (China) Import (VGIC), FAW-Volkswagen Automotive (FAW-VW) and SAIC Volkswagen Automotive (SAIC VW), will recall vehicles with Takata driver and/or passenger front airbag inflators (PSAN without desiccant).

The recall plan has been reported to to AQSIQ, and covers 4.86m vehicles, which were either imported by VGIC, imported and produced by FAW-VW or produced by SAIC VW. The recall will start in 2018 and be carried out in stages.

VGC said in a statement it had been decided, after discussions with Chinese authorities, inflator rupture may occur in rare cases when airbags deployed, which posed a potential safety risk.

“Acting upon an advice from the Chinese safety authority, Volkswagen Group China therefore made this recall decision. As of now, Volkswagen Group has not received any report on our products worldwide regarding ruptured Takata front airbags. A comprehensive parts analysis programme conducted so far, showed that the analysed inflators on Volkswagen Group products worldwide are under normal condition,” the statement said.

Inflator replacements will be supplied and fitted in stages under the recall programme.
