Volvo Group and Daimler Truck have entered into a binding agreement to establish a 50/50 joint venture aimed at developing a software-defined vehicle platform for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
This collaboration aims to propel the industry’s transformation by setting a new standard in software-defined capabilities.
The venture’s headquarters will be in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The joint venture’s mission is to develop a versatile and brand-agnostic truck operating system.
This system will be made available to other commercial OEMS, allowing them to leverage the platform for their own unique digital offerings.
Despite this collaboration, Volvo Group and Daimler Truck stated that they will be competitors in other areas of business, ensuring that their product and service offerings remain distinct, especially concerning digital customer solutions.

By GlobalDataThe agreement follows a previous announcement in May, where Volvo Group and Daimler Truck revealed their intentions to co-develop a common software-defined vehicle platform and a dedicated truck operating system.
The joint venture will focus on the specification and procurement of high-performance control units designed to handle large volumes of data.
These units will aid in creating an operating system and tools that other manufacturers can utilise to develop their own digital features, effectively decoupling software from hardware development and facilitating wireless updates.
The completion of this joint venture is anticipated in the first half of 2025, pending all necessary regulatory approvals.
Volvo Group president and CEO Martin Lundstedt added: “We are joining forces to redefine software architecture and pioneer a new era of self-optimising trucks. Together we are removing complexity to allow our customers to unlock higher levels of connectivity, safety and efficiency and continually push for a greater performance. It is a revolutionary response to the challenges of our modern world, and we are proud to be setting the industry standard.”
