The report said the additional line will add some 2,500 workers to the 2,000 already being recruited ahead of the planned 2018 start of production at the Charleston, South Carolina.

The Charleston plant expansion is a vote of confidence in Volvo’s sales momentum, buoyed by a revamped lineup led by the flagship XC90 SUV, even as U.S. auto market growth tails off.

just-auto/QUBE’s product lifecycle database (PLDB) notes that: “V431, the third generation S60, should appear in 2018 and be based upon SPA engineering architecture. It will be made in Sweden, China and the USA. Volvo’s forthcoming Berkeley County plant in South Carolina will have an initial capacity of 100,000 units per annum [a second line adds at least 50,000 units to that]. It has been confirmed that the US plant will be for SPA vehicles and that the S60 will be one of two models to be built there. The other would logically be the new XC60.”
