Geely-owned Volvo Cars has shown its new all-electric mid-size SUV, the EX60, which it says benefits from new innovations to enable class-leading range on a full charge.
Volvo Cars says the new model is its first entry in the largest electric segment globally, allowing it to substantially increase its addressable market and electric market share.

“The new, all-electric EX60 changes the game in terms of range, charging and price and represents a new beginning for Volvo Cars and our customers,” says Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars. “With this car, we remove all remaining obstacles for going electric. This fantastic new car is also a testament of what we are capable of at Volvo Cars, with an all-new product architecture introducing new key technologies – mega casting, cell-to-body and core computing.”
Volvo claims the car has the ability to go up to a best-in-class 503 miles (810 kilometres) on a single charge in an all-wheel drive configuration.
The company says the key to the long range is SPA3, Volvo Cars’ most advanced electric car architecture to date, which underpins the EX60.
Integrating the battery directly into the structure of the car with cell-to-body technology and developing e-motors in-house makes the EX60 more energy efficient and cuts excessive weight, Volvo says. The new cell design of the EX60’s battery carefully balances energy density and power delivery, further increasing driving range.
The EX60 is also the first Volvo car built with the help of mega casting, whereby hundreds of smaller parts are replaced with a single, high-precision casting in the production process. This – it is claimed – reduces weight, which again improves range.

Fast charging speeds are made possible by Volvo Cars’ new 800-volt electrical system and in-house developed software, which together move energy into the battery more efficiently.
The use of lighter materials and less heat generation also support faster charging times, meaning the EX60 can add hundreds of kilometres of range in just a few minutes, Volvo claims.
The EX60 is available with three different powertrain variants. The P12 AWD Electric variant offers the class-leading range of up to 503 miles, while the P10 AWD Electric clocks in at a range of up to 410 miles. A rear-wheel powered P6 Electric variant delivers up to 385 miles of range.
