New vehicle sales in Vietnam increased by 23% to 9,551 units in April, compared with 7,765 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA).
 
After declining by 2% in the first quarter, cumulative sales to the end of April were 5% higher at 30,840 units, compared with 29,448 units in the first four months of 2009.
 
Demand for passenger cars remained strong, with sales rising by 8% year-on-year in April to 2,383 units. Sales in the first four months of the year were 53% higher at 8,883 units. Demand for MPVs and SUVs also recovered in April after a sharp decline in the first quarter, with sales rising by 75% to 1,622 units. In the first four months of the year, volumes were still 27% lower at 6,511 units – compared with 8,901 units a year earlier.
 
Sales of commercial vehicles, which were just slightly lower in the first quarter, increased by 19% to 5,546 units in April – bringing the four-month total to 15,446 units (+5%). Toyota sales increased by 35% to 9,134 units in the first four months; followed by Kia distributor Truong Hai with 6,620 units (+37%); and Vinamotor 3,892 units (-14%).
