New vehicle sales in Vietnam rose by 1.4% to 9,513 units in March, from 9,384 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Vietnam Automotive Manufacturers Association.

The data, which also includes imports, shows passenger car sales expanding by 12% to 2,713 units, while commercial vehicle sales rose by 6% to 4,391 units. Sales of SUVs and MPVs fell by almost 20% to 1,831 units, however, after strong growth in the first two months of the year.

First-quarter sales rose by close to 30% to 27,896 units, with passenger car sales leading the market with growth of 47% to 9,559 units. SUV and MPV volume rose by 34% to 6,575 units, and commercial vehicle sales by 16% at 11,762 units.

Toyota continued to lead the market in the first quarter with 7,367, up by 7% year-on-year; with Truong Hai is rapidly closing the gap in second place with 7,225 sales (+83%)  – helped by strong demand for the Kia Morning and Forte passenger cars and K-series trucks.

GM Daewoo was third with 2,628 sales (+40%), followed by Ford in fourth place with 1,986 sales (+64%).
