Sales of new cars, trucks and buses – including exports and locally produced vehicles – surged to 8,920 units last month from 2,989 a year earlier, Dow Jones reported, citing data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
Month on month sales were down 26.2%, the news agency noted.
“Sales were very strong in January because many people bought cars before the Lunar New Year holiday which fell between 6 February and 12 February,” automobile analyst Nguyen Van Trung told Dow Jones.
According to government data, Vietnam imported 10,000 fully assembled vehicles valued at $US187m in the first two months of this year, compared with 1,000 vehicles valued at $37m in the same period of 2006.
Imports of vehicles and parts were worth a combined $391m in January and February, up from $86m a year earlier, the Dow Jones report said.
