Valeo's Cruise4U, demonstrated at CES in Las Vegas this year, has started a 13,000 mile partially-automated trip around the US, taking in Seattle, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, New York, Miami, San Antonio and San Diego, before finishing in San Francisco.

The vehicle will travel both day and night in real traffic conditions, while, when conditions allow, the driver can decide to either control it manually or monitor as Valeo Cruise4U manages steering.

The Valeo SCALATM laser scanner is the enabler in the Cruise4U, scanning the area in front of the vehicle and detecting cars, motorbikes, pedestrians and static obstacles such as trees, parked vehicles and guard rails. It works during the day and at night, when the car is driving at both high and low speeds.

Using the collected data, the scanner creates a map of the environment allowing it to analyse and anticipate events around the vehicle.

On the Hands-Off US tour, the Valeo SCALATM will work with a front-facing camera to scan the environment ahead of the vehicle, detecting any obstacles and four corner radars for safe lane changing.
