Said to be the production version of the Performance Concept Car (PCC) the S60R has an adaptive active chassis, a 300-horsepower engine, servotronic steering, Brembo brakes, and Haldex electronically controlled all-wheel-drive.
Three active chassis settings: Comfort, Sport and Advanced Sport are available to the driver.
Comfort is claimed to provide a luxurious ride without compromising the S60R’s control over any road surface.
Sport, the default setting, is supposed to provides optimum performance during normal but sporty driving and Advanced Sport is said to transform the car into an “uncompromising sports sedan, prioritising maximum driving pleasure”.
The Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept, which Volvo calls Four-C, employs seven electronic sensors to collect data on the movement of the car, adjusting shock valve damping almost instantaneously, based on driving style and road conditions.
The system measures data input five hundred times per second.
The S60R has a turbocharged 2.5 litre, five-cylinder engine, developing 300 hp and 295 ft/lbs of torque at 2,100 rpm, and an electronically limited 155 mph top speed.
Two transmissions will be offered: a new compact six-speed manual or a five-speed ‘Geartronic’ semi-automatic, which allows full automatic or manual gear selection.
Four-piston Brembo brakes with aluminium callipers, anti-lock brakes, traction control and dynamic stability control are also standard.
The S60R will debut at the Paris Motor Show on 26 September alongside the wagon V70R.
Production will begin in early 2003; the S60R will be built at Ghent, Belgium while the V70R will be made at Torslanda in Sweden.
