Volvo Cars of North America is teaming up with an internationally recognized commuter assistance program to deliver the message that alternative fuel vehicles mesh well with commuter trip reduction programs.

Volvo is loaning a bi-fuel gasoline/compressed natural gas S70 sedan to VPSI Commuter Vanpools, a Troy, Michigan-based organization that specializes in developing employee trip reduction programs for employers throughout North America and Europe. VPSI will use the Volvo at business sites throughout the Detroit area to showcase its commuter assistance efforts and demonstrate alternative fuel technologies that can be incorporated into company fleets.

The car was delivered to VPSI at the 10th annual conference of the Society of Environmental Journalists taking place now at Michigan State University in Lansing, Mich.

“We’re excited that we’re going to be able to show Michigan commuters how alternative energy vehicles can be attractive, functional cars like the Volvo S70,” says Jon Martz, vice president of marketing for VPSI. “There are many ways employers can reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, including the use of alternative fuel vehicles in their fleets and incorporating trip reduction techniques such as vanpooling. These two approaches fit nicely together for the common goal.”
