A VW of America spokesman said that the faulty sensors could cause the vehicles to exceed Federal exhaust emission standards.

Affected are 1999 to 2001 model year Jetta (Bora in other markets), Golf and New Beetle cars, most of which were built at the huge VW assembly plant in Puebla, Mexico.

VW also said that 46,000 cars sold in Canada would probably be recalled for emission control system repairs.

A VW UK spokesman said that the company was checking with Germany but did not expect the US recall to affect cars sold on this side of the Atlantic. UK and European Golf and Bora models are built in Europe but Pueblo is the sole New Beetle source.
