Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported its best June sales in 27 years.
In June, Volkswagen sold 33,410 new cars in the U.S., which represents a 9 percent increase over last year’s mark of 30,640. Not since 1973 has Volkswagen enjoyed June sales of this magnitude.
Half way through the year, Volkswagen is well ahead of 1999’s torrid pace. Year-to-date, the German automaker has sold 179,651 new cars in the U.S., up 19.4 percent from the same period last year when sales were 150,495.
June represented another record sales month for Volkswagen’s award-winning Passat sedan and wagon. The Passat enjoyed an all-time record month with sales of 8,351, versus 1999’s mark of 6,314, an increase of 32.3 percent.
Volkswagen’s popular New Beetle established a new June record and its third best month ever with sales of 7,837, up 3.5 percent from last year’s figure of 7,575.
Jetta also set a June record with sales of 13,348, a 1.9 percent increase over 1999’s 13,101.
