Vehicle
production last week in the U.S., Canada and Mexico was expected to hit an estimated
315,572 units, down from the 322,718 cars and trucks built in the previous week,
according to Ward’s Automotive Reports.
Including last week’s estimates, calendar year North American output now totals
9,715,718 vehicles, down 13.1 percent from like-2000’s pace.

In the U.S., automakers were expected to produce 232,260 vehicles last week,
down 0.6 percent from the 233,718 cars and trucks built the week before. To
date, calendar 2001 U.S. vehicle output totals an estimated 6,974,209 units,
down 14.3 percent from the 8,134,789 vehicles built in like-2000.
Last week’s Canadian vehicle production was estimated at 47,193, an 11.7 percent
decrease from the 53,464 units assembled in the previous week. Estimated calendar-2001
Canadian vehicle production now stands at 1,592,117 units, down 15.4 percent
compared to the 1,881,418 vehicles produced in like-2000.
Of the cars and trucks slated for production last week in the U.S., General
Motors Corp. accounted for 33.5 percent; Ford Motor Co., 28.0 percent; Chrysler
of DaimlerChrysler, 15.4 percent; Honda of America Mfg. Inc., 5.8 percent; Toyota
Motor Mfg. Inc., 4.7 percent; Nissan Motor Mfg. Corp., 1.9 percent; New United
Motor Mfg. Inc., 3.2 percent; Subaru-Isuzu Automotive Inc., 1.5 percent; Mitsubishi
Motor Mfg. of America Inc., 1.7 percent; AutoAlliance International Inc., 0.7
percent; Mercedes-Benz U.S. of DaimlerChrysler, 0.5 percent; BMW of North America
Inc., 1.3 percent; and other manufacturers, 1.8 percent.
