The Camry has been the best-selling car in America for seven of the past eight years. It’s also a significant model in Japan and Asia-Pacific markets and is built in Australia in both right- and left-hand drive forms for local and Far East sales.

But it’s been a flop in Europe, disappearing from price lists about half way through the current model’s four-year lifespan.

Toyota claims that the fully restyled and reengineered Camry “will feature significantly improved performance and new level of comfort and refinement”. But don’t all car makers say that about their new models?

Toyota can justifiably claim, however, to extend its hybrid leadership by making Hybrid Synergy Drive available in the 2007 model.

“The Camry Hybrid will deliver the highest level of… performance ever achieved in both fuel efficiency and low emissions and also achieve impressive power,” the US unit claimed in a statement.

The wraps come off on Monday, 9 January.
