Subaru maker Fuji Heavy Industries will use the Frankfurt motor show to launch two new models: the Legacy 3.0R and Outback. In addition to heavily revised styling, both new vehicles will feature a three-litre ‘flat six’ engine developing 240 hp coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission with a semi-manual mode.

The Outback retains its higher off-road ground clearance, and carries over a version of the current 2.5-litre flat-four engine with 165 hp; the Outback 3.0R also offers the new flat-six engine.

European-market versions of these new Subarus will be built in Japan; US market cars are expected to come from the car maker’s factory in Lafayette, Indiana. The plant began production in 1989 as an Isuzu/Fuji Heavy joint venture but became a full Fuji Heavy subsidiary last January after Isuzu announced it would stop building SUVs in the US.
