Nissan’s sales and marketing operations are preparing to move from Southern California to the Nashville, Tennessee, area, prompting many employees, including senior executives, to look for work elsewhere, Automotive News reported.

A senior Nissan executive told the newspaper that a top North American management committee, including sales and manufacturing executives, will discuss the move on Tuesday in Smyrna, Tennessee, home to the company’s manufacturing headquarters about 20 miles southeast of Nashville.


Automotive News said the meeting is sure to be tense as many Nissan employees, including at least some in top management, are heartsick about leaving what they say is the creative, future-oriented culture of California.


The state is also regarded as one of the key US markets for import-nameplate vehicles.


“People are lining up at the resume (CV)-making machine,” the senior Nissan executive, who opposes the move strongly, told Automotive News.


The report said the move is said to be part of the cost-cutting regime of Carlos Ghosn, CEO of parent Nissan Motor Co.


Dallas was said to be another contender for the relocation, Automotive News noted, adding that Nissan has about 1,300 employees in top management, sales, marketing, design and product planning in Gardena and other Southern California cities.
