(GM)Vauxhall’s new VX220 sports car is to built for only three years, say South African media reports (15/8/00).
Production of the two-seater roadster, to be built at a facility on the Lotus site in Hethel, Norfolk, UK, and launched in November of this year, will be 3,000 per annum until 2003.
Quoting Vauxhall Chairman and Managing Director Nick Reilly, the S.A. reports say that the need for a sports car was identified by Vauxhall and Opel three years ago, but to bring it to the market would have taken six years. These production problems were resolved by working in conjunction with Lotus using the Elise as a base, continue S.A. news media.
The reports – again citing Mr Reilly – also confirm that the VX220, shown at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show, is a bridging vehicle, taking the company through to a new, GM-designed vehicle to arrive in three years time.
