The promotion was scheduled to end at close of business on Friday, GM spokeswoman Deborah Silverman told the Associated Press (AP).


The report noted that GM introduced the incentive in June and originally planned to end it in July, but it proved so popular that the company extended it several times.


AP said GM’s US sales soared 41% in June and 19% in July – though some pundits think the company’s September results, due out next week, will suffer from the promotion ‘pulling forward’ sales.


Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG’s Chrysler Group matched the programme in July, the Associated Press said, adding that both plan to end their rival incentive plans on Monday.
