General
Motors is to bring its new Chevrolet Cavalier forward by a year, rolling it out
as a 2004 model, Automotive News reported, citing GM sources and suppliers.

GM
is to speed up the development process by only lightly restyling the 2003 German-designed
Opel Astra to create the Cavalier, Automtive News said, adding that GM stylists
had originally planned a major interior and exterior revamp.

Automotive News said GM originally planned to restyle the Cavalier and its
Pontiac Sunfire sibling in 1999. But the project was axed after styling proposals
were panned by consumer clinics. Small car redesign was subsequently assigned
to Opel.

The current models still sell well, Automotive News said, but require incentives
as high as $2,500 per vehicle.

GM may drop the Sunfire and replace it with the Vibe, a ‘crossover’
vehicle developed jointly with Toyota, Automotive News said.
