Rearview mirror specialist Gentex Corporation is now supplying a driver’s-side, exterior, automatic-dimming mirror for the US-built 2003 Toyota Avalon.

The mirror, which incorporates Gentex’s lightweight, vibration-reducing “thin glass” technology, is standard on the top-specification Avalon XLS.

The Gentex Night Vision Safety electrochromatic mirrors automatically darken to reduce glare from the headlamps of vehicles approaching from the rear.

“Our research indicates that consumers appreciate exterior automatic-dimming mirrors,” said Gentex executive vice president Ken La Grand said. “Once they’ve driven with them, they can’t imagine owning a vehicle without them.

“This is our first exterior automatic-dimming mirror programme at Toyota, ” La Grand added.
