Ford will end its $US3 billion programme to buy back Firestone tyres at the end of March, the car maker’s chief financial officer said on Friday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Martin Inglis said Ford has replaced roughly 9.5 million of the 13.5 million tyres included in the programme that began last May, the newspaper said.


“We would think we still have another $400 million to spend on the programme,” he told the newspaper.


Ford began the programme in order to buy back the Firestone tyres not included in the August 2000 government-directed recall of 6.5 million tyres used mainly as original equipment on Ford Explorers, the Chicago Tribune said.
