The 2003-model Mustang Mach 1 special edition made its debut at the New York International Auto Show – 38 years after Lee Iacocca introduced the original 1964 model in the Big Apple.

The latest Mach 1 will have a 4.6-litre, four-valve, DOHC V8 engine delivering “over 300bhp” when it goes on sale at the end of this year. The engine has specially calibrated camshafts, a modified upper intake to accommodate the ram-air system, a heated PCV, a forged crankshaft in manual transmission models and performance exhaust manifolds.

Distinguishing styling features include “comfort-weave” leather seats, a shaker hood scoop and a new interpretation of the original car’s classic “Magnum 500” chrome wheels.

Ford will build 6,500 Mustang Mach 1 special editions (total annual build is around 160,000) at its Dearborn Assembly Plant.

The original Mach 1 was introduced in 1968 as a concept car and went into production in 1969.

That car had either a 250-horsepower 351 Cleveland V8 or a 335-hp 428 Cobra-Jet engine.

A1974 version based on the much smaller Mustang II had a 2.8-litre V-6 with dual exhaust in an era when the base engine was a wimpy 2.3-litre four.

The “shaker scoop” on the 2003 Mach 1 is mounted atop the intake manifold and directs air through a secondary filter box to the intake. The intake also pulls cool air from the front grille to ensure free breathing.

The car also features more prominent rocker-panel mouldings and an air dam extension, painted low-gloss black.

The centre console and gear shifter surrounded are painted in a grey accent finish with an aluminium shift boot ring and aluminum shifter ball and the accelerator, brake, clutch and dead pedals are also polished aluminium.

The grey-backed instrument cluster features unique retro-look dials and the Mach 1 also has a standard six-disc in-dash CD changer audio system.

The new Mach 1 will be offer a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

The car is lowered one-half of an inch compared to the standard GT and has firmer suspension settings for better-balanced ride and improved handling.

Thirteen-inch Brembo front disc brake rotors and performance calipers with a black-anodised finish are standard along with ABS and traction control.
