Ford spokesman Glenn Ray told the news agency the problem was caused by a plastic tab in the buckle, designed to reduce noise, which can wear down over time and break off, preventing the buckle from holding the belt properly.
Ray reportedly said Ford had received one report of a minor injury stemming from the buckle and will begin sending notices to Escape owners about it next month.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had been investigating the problem, but the Ford recall was voluntary, Ray said, according to Reuters.
