Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. are set to reimburse customers for expenses incurred to replace tires which are included in the company’s voluntary recall.
Firestone said the reimbursement plan, retroactive to Jan. 1, specifies how customers can be reimbursed for costs related to exchanging the tires included in last week’s recall. Firestone is moving to recall and replace 6.5 million of its ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT tires. Federal authorities are investigating 46 deaths and more than 300 incidents in which the tread peeled off the tires.

The reimbursement policy set by Firestone on Tuesday covers tires purchased between Jan. 1 and Aug. 8 from an authorized Firestone retailer to replace the tires recalled on Aug. 9. Prorated fees paid for the new tires will be reimbursed, Firestone said.
The plan also covers recalled tires that were replaced with competitors’ tires between Aug. 9, the first day of the voluntary recall, and Aug. 16 at stores other than Firestone retailers. Firestone will reimburse these customers up to $100 for each tire, including applicable mounting and balancing charges and taxes.
“We believe this is a simple and fair way to make things right for our customers,” John Lampe, executive vice president, said in a prepared statement.
Details of the reimbursement policy will be explained Wednesday on Firestone’s Web sites and in an advertisement to be published Wednesday in more than 41 major U.S. newspapers.
