Production cutbacks in the U.S.
auto industry are being felt at major suppliers. Automotive News reports this
week that Delphi has ‘temporarily’ laid off 4,300 staff while 6,000 Visteon workers
have been sent home.

Delphi, which makes chassis, steering systems, electrical systems and interior
components, including most of General Motors’ instrument clusters, told Automotive
News that further temporary layoffs are expected. The company is monitoring
its customers’ production schedules to determine necessary cutbacks.

Meanwhile, a Visteon spokeswoman told the newspaper that the layoffs announced
yesterday were strictly for this week.

Automotive News says that Visteon has been issuing periodic temporary layoffs
since Ford, its largest customer and former parent company, announced first-quarter
production cutbacks in December. Ford has this week idled 12 assembly plants
in North America to reduce mounting dealer stocks.
