Burns made his comments during a motor industry conference in Dearborn, Michigan.

“Having resided on both sides of the customer-supplier relationship, I am convinced that a collaborative future is the only way we will ever realise our mutual potential,” Burns said.

“This is arguably the most significant industry in the world,” he added. “But this status does not afford us the luxury of simply plodding ahead and doing things ‘the way we’ve always done it.’  The challenges we face today mean we must drive harder, be more efficient, more capable, and add more value. But even more fundamental is the need to work together.”

Burns added, “The operative question is, ‘Are we better off working individually – essentially representing our own interests – or working together on important issues and benefiting from the strength of the world’s most significant industry?’ I believe the answer is clear. We must work together.”
