It has been reported that DaimlerChrysler AG will idle all 3,300 workers at the Dodge assembly plant this week to reduce the number of Neons waiting to be sold.
The Belvidere, Ill., plant, which builds the Dodge and Plymouth Neons, will be shut down for the week starting Monday (07/08/00), two weeks after the workers returned from an annual summer shutdown that began July 3. They will get 95 percent of their regular pay under the United Auto Workers union contract.

Combined U.S. sales of Plymouth and Dodge Neons through July fell 5.6 percent to 108,768 from a year earlier.
Dealers had an 85-day supply of Plymouth Neons as of June 30, up from an average of 60 to 70 days. The Dodge Neon supply was 58 days.
The world’s No. 5 automaker earlier this week said it would idle 2,800 workers, or about half the workforce, at its Toledo Jeep assembly plant next week to help trim dealer inventory of Cherokee sport-utility vehicles. Dealers had a 90-day supply of Cherokees at the end of July.
