Nissan will offer a newly-developed Cummins V8 turbo diesel in its next generation full-size pick-up in the US.
The company made the announcement at the Nissan 360 industry showcase of its global product and technology portfolio. The engine is now in the late development stage and undergoing testing.
The Cummins 5.0-litre engine has been optimised for the next generation Titan and the diesel maker is also is developing a version of the engine for commercial vehicle customers.
Fred Diaz, divisional vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing, Service & Parts, Nissan North America, said: “We have done our homework on the next-generation Titan. Truck owners told us there’s a demand for the performance and torque of a diesel in a capable truck that doesn’t require the jump up to a heavy-duty commercial pickup.
Nissan has previously said that the next Titan will add powertrain options and cab-and-box configurations to broaden its appeal.
Dave Crompton, vice president, Cummins Engine Business said the engine a torque rating of more than 500lb/ft and more than 300hp. It will be built at the Columbus Engine Plant in Indiana.

By GlobalDataLike the current model, the next-generation Titan will be built at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi facility and its petrol engines made at the company’s Decherd powertrain plant in Tennessee.
Nissan has not announcing launch dates for the truck although engineering prototypes powered by the Cummins engine are currently undergoing extensive performance and durability testing.
