Page views on Carfax.com rose nearly 150% between the first and second quarter, according to WebSideStory, Inc., a San Diego-based provider of real- time Internet intelligence and Web audience analysis. Carfax.com uses WebSideStory’s HitBox Enterprise service (www.hitboxenterprise.com), an outsourced Web site measurement solution that provides hundreds of real-time statistics about online visitor and customer behavior. Because it collects data remotely through browser-based technology, HitBox Enterprise provides third-party Web traffic verification.
“Earlier this year we launched a major advertising and public relations effort to promote our service to consumers throughout the country,” said Scott Fredericks, vice president of marketing for Carfax, Inc. “Since then consumers have checked 6.2 million cars through our database — That’s one vehicle identification number every 1.2 seconds. We’ve received thousands of emails from consumers who have avoided buying cars with potentially costly and life-threatening problems.”
Carfax helps millions of consumers and thousands of dealers across the nation uncover hidden problems in a vehicle’s past. Using the 17-character VIN, the service, which contains over one billion vehicle records, can reveal past salvage history, flood damage, lemon brands, odometer fraud and major accidents or fire damage. Through the company’s proprietary dealer locator service, consumers can find Carfax Certified Dealers in their local area. Company research shows that the majority of consumers currently in the used car market who access the Internet site intend to purchase within one week.
“Looking at the data, it’s apparent that visitor activity on Carfax.com has surged in recent months,” said Erik Bratt, WebSideStory spokesperson. “Total page views have escalated nearly two and a half times.”
