The technology will be incorporated into a new family of V6 engines that are scheduled for introduction in 2005 and will be used in small to medium-sized passenger vehicles.

Variable cam timing is a means of precisely controlling the flow of air into and out of an engine by allowing the camshaft to be dynamically phased relative to its crankshaft.

BorgWarner says that the worldwide market for variable cam timing will grow from 2000 figures of 5.2 million engines, or 6.5 million VCT units, to 15 million engines, or 23 million VCT units, by 2006. Morse TEC’s variable cam timing technology includes devices that utilise camshaft torque as their actuation energy. Conventional variable cam timing devices depend on engine oil pressure for actuation.

BorgWarner claims that Morse TEC’s unique camshaft torque actuated approach requires fewer engine architecture changes and yields fuel and emissions benefits greater than conventional hydraulically actuated devices.

“This inaugural VCT contract is a milestone for Morse TEC, and is a natural extension of our global position in the fixed timing drive market,” said Roger Wood, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Morse TEC. “BorgWarner Morse TEC is uniquely positioned to engineer, manage and supply completely integrated variable timing systems to improve fuel economy, emissions and overall engine performance for our customers.”
