Ford spokespeople declined to comment to Reuters on the topic of a press conference called at the plant for Monday, but a source familiar with the company’s plans told the news agency it would announce the long-rumoured move of Mustang production from an ageing plant in Dearborn.
According to Reuters, the Flat Rock plant, which began building the new Mazda 6 sedan late last year, has been under-used for a good part of its 11-year history. Ford, which owns a controlling stake in Mazda, has been trying to boost factory productivity as part of its turnaround plan, Reuters noted.
The news agency said the next generation Mustang, an icon of the 1960s that’s still one of Ford’s most popular models, is scheduled to go into production next year.
