According to Reuters, the work stoppage occurred at plants in New York, Ohio and Michigan.
The news agency noted that American Axle, which makes axles, gears, drivelines and related products, was spun off from General Motors in 1994 and remains a major GM supplier – sales to GM represented about 82% the company’s total net sales in the first three quarters of 2003.
According to Reuters, GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said the company was still assessing the potential impact of the strike, and had no further comment.
