Internet service provider America Online has formed an alliance with online car buyers’ guide Edmunds.com to launch a new autos channel offering comprehensive vehicle research and car shopping tools.

AOL has also reached a new agreement with Kelley Blue Book to provide new and used car prices. AutoTrader.com content remains available on AOL Autos, including access to Consumer Reports’ ratings recommendations, including safety information.

According to Forrester Research, third-party leads on new-car buyers provided dealers with nearly 40% of their online sales in 2002.

The launch of the autos channels on the AOL service, CompuServe, and Netscape marks AOL’s entry into the lead generation business
