Woodbridge says it has developed a flame-retardant foam for a range of under-hood acoustical and thermal insulating applications, to meet what it describes as “increasingly stringent” OEM needs.

The company claims the new WhisperTech material represents a breakthrough in flammability performance for noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) solutions, offering better sound absorption and transmission loss properties, versus competing materials including metals and engineered fibres.

WhisperTech V0 foam provides engine-bay sound management capabilities, while
exceeding industry regulations for flammability of polymeric materials. The foam self-extinguishes, once exposed to an open flame in both horizontal and vertical test conditions.

“WhisperTech UL-94 V0 rated, low-density flexible urethane formulations are used to balance cost and NVH performance requirements, for hood liners and dash insulators,” said Woodbridge sales and general manager, StrataForm, Domenic Sinopoli.

For his part, Woodbridge NVH solutions product manager, Pejman Hashemi, said: “These extreme flame retardant formulations are available for a wide range of moulded components in contact with the engine such as various acoustical insulators for manifolds, valve and cam covers, fuel rails, air intakes and pumps.”
