General Motors has shut down operations in Egypt due to the violence in the country.

“We made the decision to close our Cairo office and halt production operations in our plant in 6th of October City,” the company said in a statement cited by the Detroit News. “The safety and security of our employees is of paramount importance to us. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

The paper said the automaker closed operations in Egypt on Wednesday (14 August). GM spokesman Greg Martin reportedly said the automaker would continue reviewing events before deciding when to reopen the office and plant.

GM employs more than 1,400 in Egypt where it sells Chevrolet and Opel vehicles and builds trucks, cars and minibuses.
