UAW officials will vote on Friday on whether to recommend to workers that they forego a 3% or one dollar an hour wage increase that is due to take effect from September 18th.

The measure would help Chrysler offset rising healthcare costs, and would match concessions granted to Ford and GM within the last year.

According to the newspaper unions are resisting such a deal because they say that Chrysler is not in such dire straits as its competitors.

Even if UAW officials recommend to workers that they forego the pay increase, members would still have to vote accordingly. Only 51% of workers at Ford ratified their agreement, and this appears to be influencing union officials who would not want to make a recommendation that is not adopted.
