Toyota was not aware of incidents due to the problem.

Toyota Motor Sales USA last May recalled about 450,000 2004 to 2011 Sienna minivans originally sold in cold weather states that use road salt to melt snow and ice. Some of the 2004-2010 vehicles were involved in an April 2010 recall for the same issues.

The company said the affected vehicles have a spare tyre carrier stowed under the vehicle with a lightweight, foam water splash protector that uses a cable to hold it in place. Road salt can corrode the cable, possibly resulting in the spare tyre falling off. Other reports said the cover was added during the 2010 recall and may have not been installed properly while anti-corrosion coating added at the same time was proving ineffective.

Other automakers have also recalled ‘cold weather state’ cars for a variety of corrosion-related issues.

Earlier on Monday, Bloomberg News reported the NHTSA had started a probe of Toyota after receiving consumer complaints about unintended acceleration in Corollas.

The automaker paid a US$1.2bn penalty in 2009 due to its handling of an unintended acceleration issue tied to floor mats and accelerator pedals.
