Toyota agreed a deal to settle a US lawsuit over a 2007 fatal car crash after sudden acceleration, one day after a jury ordered the automaker to pay US$3m in damages in the case.

The settlement, details of which were not disclosed, allowed Toyota to avert possible punitive damages that could have come on top of the $3m payment, Kyodo News reported.

An Oklahoma City district court jury found Toyota liable for the crash of a Camry which left the driver Jean Bookout, 82, seriously injured and the sole passenger, Barbara Schwarz, 70, dead.

The case reportedly was the first loss for Toyota in a series of trials over acceleration issues.

“While we strongly disagree with the verdict, we are satisfied that the parties reached a mutually acceptable agreement to settle this case,” Toyota said in a statement.
