Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Mississippi (TMMMS) on Monday (6 February) added a second shift to make the Corolla. Approximately 2,000 people are now employed at the plant which was mothballed for a time after Toyota’s plans changed following the global financial crisis about three years ago.
“Adding a second shift is a significant milestone for us,” said David Copenhaver, head of administration at TMMMS.

TMMMS is Toyota’s 14th North American plant, cost US$800m and has annual capacity to produce 150,000 Corollas. Toyota previously built the model at the now-closed NUMMI plant in Fremont, California, its one-time joint venture with GM. It also has a Corolla plant in Ontario, Canada.
Toyota’s direct total employment in the US is now nearly 31,000.
