Toyota has broken ground at the site of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Mississippi, (TMMMS), in Blue Springs, its eighth vehicle manufacturing plant in North America.

Production at the $US1.3bn plant is scheduled to begin by 2010 with 2,000 workers who will build the Highlander SUV at the rate of up to 150,000 a year. Once production begins at TMMMS, Toyota will have the capacity to produce approximately 2.2mmillion cars and trucks annually in North America.
Excavation began in March and site preparation will begin in May. It is expected that 2,000 workers will be on-site during the construction peak in summer 2008.
