Tightening environmental regulations in the US have prompted Subaru maker Fuji Heavy Industries to consider launching electric vehicles again in the region, president Yasuyuki Yoshinaga has said.

Emissions regulations in some states would be tightened in 2018, Yoshinaga told Jiji Press.

“Electric vehicles are [effective] products to help cope with these new regulations. We want to make a decision by the end of the year.”

Yoshinaga said Fuji shareholder Toyota Motor would help his with fuel cell vehicles.

In 2009, Fuji leased 200 minivehicle-based EVs for about two years to corporate customers.

But the project ended as it proved unprofitable.
